Why Does The Church Called One?

“Why is the Church referred to as ‘one’? The term ‘one’ signifies the Church’s essential unity as a singular, worldwide entity rooted in Christ Jesus. Furthermore, the Church is described as ‘holy’ because it constitutes the Body of Christ, with Jesus serving as its head. It’s important to note that this holiness doesn’t imply that all members of the Church are without sin.”

Why Should The Church Be One?

“Why is the unity of the Church so crucial? The unity of the Church plays a pivotal role in our spiritual endurance and collective witness as Christians. It reminds us that we are not meant to lead solitary Christian lives but to come together as a cohesive body. This unity is not just a matter of convenience; it has profound implications for our mission. In fact, Jesus Himself emphasized its significance, as recorded in John 17:21, where He authorized the unbelieving world to evaluate whether the Father had sent Him into the world based on the observable unity of the Church. This underscores that our unity as a faith community is not only a source of strength but also a powerful testament to the truth of our beliefs. This perspective sheds light on the importance of maintaining the Church’s unity as we navigate our spiritual journeys.”

How Is The Church Considered One?

The concept of the Church being one is closely intertwined with the fundamental unity found within the Holy Trinity, consisting of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Just as God’s unity is expressed through these three divine aspects, the Church too is considered as a singular entity. This unity finds its roots in Jesus Christ, the founder of the Church, who reconciled humanity with God and formed us into a spiritual family under the umbrella of the Church. It is important to recognize that the oneness of the Church is not merely a symbolic or abstract idea; rather, it is a spiritual reality made manifest through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in those who hold faith. This divine presence within believers serves as a unifying force, binding the Church together as a singular, spiritual body.

The Church's One Foundation
The Church’s One Foundation

The Church is one because of its source: “the highest exemplar and source of this mystery is the unity, in the Trinity of Persons, of one God, the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit.” (CCC 813). The Church was born in the heart of God the Father as part of his glorious plan from the beginning. One: the Church is one. This means that it is a single, united and global Church which has its basis in Christ Jesus. Holy: the Church is holy, because it is the Body of Christ with Jesus as the head. This does not mean that all members of the Church are sin free. The unity of the church is vital for our endurance. We’re not meant to live the Christian life in isolation. And it’s vital for our witness; Jesus authorized the unbelieving world to judge whether or not the Father sent Him into the world based on the church’s visible unity (John 17:21).
